A Cozy Christmas Starts in your Attic

If staying warmer and cozier at home this winter sounds good, you should probably keep reading. Attic insulation and sealing your attic off from the inside of your home can make a dramatic difference in the comfort of your home.

A quick way to determine if you need more attic insulation is to check the depth of the insulation up there. If you have 6 inches or less of insulation you can expect dramatic improvements with an upgrade. If you don’t feel comfortable climbing up there, reach out to a professional insulation company for an attic inspection. Current building code in North Carolina requires that new homes have R38 or around 13 inches of insulation in the attic. Homes built in this area in the 1960’s through the 1980’s often only have 2-3 inches of insulation. It is commonly stated that around 40% of heat loss occurs through the ceiling of your home if it is not properly insulated and sealed up.

Upgrading your attic insulation is straightforward, affordable and usually takes less than 5 hours by a professional. The most affordable and effective attic insulation is blown loose fill insulation. The most common two types of blown insulation are cellulose and fiberglass. This type of insulation is pumped into the attic through a large hose.

Duke Energy customers in Haywood County and the surrounding counties can take advantage of Duke’s generous attic insulation rebate program. Duke’s Smart Saver program will help subsidize insulation upgrades by providing a $250 rebate after the work is completed. If you have HVAC ducting in your home, you can likely add another $100 rebate on top of that. Duke has minimal requirements to qualify for the rebate program that can be determined for you in a quick phone call to a pre-approved contractor. You can also reach out directly to Duke Energy’s Smart Saver Program with questions at 1-866-785-6209 or visit www.duke-energy.com/home/products/smart-saver/insulate-and-seal.

The only way to take advantage of the rebate program is to have the work performed by a Duke Energy Pre-Qualified Contractor. The best part is the contractor submits the rebates for you. You should receive payment from Duke Energy in 4-6 weeks.
